One of the reasons Americans have become overweight is lack of exercise. I don't care who you are, if all you do is sit around on your derriere, day in and day out, your metabolism is probably going to take a deep plunge at some point. And, typical American eating habits certainly don't help the situation! Now, I'm not suggesting that you go out for a long run if you haven't been in the habit of exercising for a long time. Running is an activity that you need to gradually build up to. You might even begin by walking, then, work up to a jog. After several weeks, when your endurance has improved, set out for a short run and gradually increase your running distance. For weight loss, running is one of the best exercises that you can engage in! After all, the only way you're going to shed excess pounds is by burning more calories than you consume! Running burns calories quicker and more efficiently than walking for the same amount of time. (Of course, the longer you run, the more calories you burn!) Running (especially on hard surfaces) can be hard on your back and joints. So, if you have back or knee problems, you definitely need to find a lower-impact exercise in which to engage.
