running and weight lossIt has become quite common to see men and women of all ages running up and down city streets, in parks, on trails, and in gyms. As obesity becomes an epidemic in the U.S., runners set out to show the world the other side of the spectrum.

One of the reasons Americans have become overweight is lack of exercise. I don't care who you are, if all you do is sit around on your derriere, day in and day out, your metabolism is probably going to take a deep plunge at some point. And, typical American eating habits certainly don't help the situation!

Now, I'm not suggesting that you go out for a long run if you haven't been in the habit of exercising for a long time. Running is an activity that you need to gradually build up to. You might even begin by walking, then, work up to a jog. After several weeks, when your endurance has improved, set out for a short run and gradually increase your running distance.

For weight loss, running is one of the best exercises that you can engage in! After all, the only way you're going to shed excess pounds is by burning more calories than you consume! Running burns calories quicker and more efficiently than walking for the same amount of time. (Of course, the longer you run, the more calories you burn!)

NOTE: You should check with your health care professional before beginning any exercise program! Click here for information on Weight loss and Exercise.

Running is NOT suitable for everyone! Running (especially on hard surfaces) can be hard on your back and joints. So, if you have back or knee problems, you definitely need to find a lower-impact exercise in which to engage. Also, if you have respiratory problems, running may not be a good idea.

Below are listed some advantages of running:

  • Aside from a good pair of running shoes and comfortable clothing, you don't need any special equipment to run.

  • Regardless of your age, if you're in good physical condition, you can train to be a runner. (I'm over fifty, and I run!)

  • Running is an exercise that can be done alone or in groups.
  • Running does not require any special skills.

  • Running is an efficient way to burn calories and lose weight.

  • Running is a great way to build lean, muscle tissue, as well as improve your cardiovascular health and increase your stamina.

  • Running time may be spent exploring your environment (if you run outdoors) or meditating or socializing. If you run on a treadmill, your time may also be spent reading, studying, or watching TV.

Keep in mind that the most important things you can do to contribute to weight loss are exercise and eat balanced, healthy meals (in moderate portions). Running can be a fun, inexpensive way to exercise!
