There is a correlation between wellness and sexual function. I'm sure you're aware that if you don't feel well, you typically are not in the mood for sex. By the same token, if you're healthy and vivacious, you're more likely to experience a healthier sex life. Because routine running can lead to better health, it can also lead to improved sexual function.

Many studies have been done on the link between how active people are and their sex lives. These studies have found, time and again, that increased physical activity contributes to better sexual performance, as well as more sexual enjoyment. Because runners are active individuals, they are usually healthier than sedentary people. And, because they are healthier, they may be happier and more sexually active.

Sex is not only a physical activity. It is also a mental and emotional activity. Exercise, such as running, not only makes the body more fit, it also leads to more mental acuity and emotional contentment. Therefore, it only stands to reason that running (and other vigorous activities) should help make sex better, too!

Evidence That Exercise Helps Improve Sexual Function

  1. The University of Texas conducted a study on the link between exercise and sexual function. Thirty-five women, ages 18 to 34, were the test subjects. On one occasion, the women cycled vigorously for about 20 minutes. They were then shown a short travel film followed by an X-rated film. The next time, the women were sedentary prior to seeing the films. By measuring the blood flow in the genital tissue after each session, it was found that the blood flow was 169% greater after the women exercised than when the women were sedentary.
  2. A study conducted by the University of California used sedentary middle-aged men as test subjects. The men were put on a routine exercise program. They exercised for one hour, three times per week. After becoming more physically active, it was found that "the men demonstrated improved sexual function, more frequent sex and orgasms, and greater satisfaction."

Other studies have found similar results, showing that both men and women seem to be more sexually aroused and achieve more sexual satisfaction when they are physically active than when they are sedentary. Moderate runners are among those who may experience healthier sex lives.

Note: Balance is always the key! To have a healthier, happier sex life, you must keep your exercise life in balance. Too much heavy exercise can actually diminish your sexual appetite and sexual performance. This is partly due to a decrease in testosterone levels. The immune system is also put at risk from exercising too hard, too long, and too often. The body needs time to recover. When the immune system is compromised, your sex life may also be compromised.
