Motion Control Running Shoes

Every runner has a unique foot. Each set of feet demands a particular type of running shoe. Which feet are in need of motion control running shoes?

A Pronated Foot

What is a pronated foot? A pronated foot can be identified as one that rolls inward at the ankle when standing, walking, or running. The middle of the pronated foot bulges inward. And, when weight is put on the pronated foot, the longitudinal arch flattens.

Excessive pronation is the most common cause of running injuries. People with flat feet are more likely to suffer from excessive pronation. Those who over-pronate typically have feet that are very flexible and unstable. These people need good motion control running shoes.

What Do Motion Control Running Shoes Do?

Motion control running shoes are designed to give pronated feet extra support. They come with firmer anti-pronation posts on the inside of the midsole. The midsole of a motion control running shoe is also firm or is of dual density. Additionally, motion control running shoes have firm heel counters. This type of running shoe is designed to resist the inward roll of pronation and, may help improve the running gait of the runner. As a result, the runner is better protected against running injuries.

The amount of excessive pronation that is present in a runner's foot is a determining factor when choosing the appropriate degree of motion control in a running shoe. If you have very little pronation, you need to lean more towards a neutral motion control shoe. And, if your feet tend to be more supinated (rolling outward at the ankle and having a high arch), you will need a running shoe that provides more cushioning, without the motion control.

Supinated feet do not absorb shock very well. Therefore, they need a lot of cushioning in a running shoe to provide shock absorption. Make sure, though, that if you DO have pronated feet, you realize that cushioned shoes tend to lack in motion control.
